History of Geophysical Engineering Program ITB
Geophysical Engineering ITB is the first geophysical engineering study program in Indonesia. Learning about geophysics has been carried out in various departments of ITB long before this study program was established, which was started around the 1980s. However, the new geophysical engineering study program was established as a department starting in 2005 according to the ITB Rector's Decree No. 222/SK/K01/OT/2005 under the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology (FIKTM) which has now changed to FTTM. The establishment of this study program is also a forum for geophysical scientific studies which were previously divided into various departments at ITB. The formation of this study program was motivated by the national need for geophysicists in the earth resource exploration industry and also the mitigation of earth and environmental disasters. At the beginning of its formation, geophysical scientific activities only focused on resource exploration. Currently, the geophysical engineering study program has developed into three groups of expertise, namely Applied and Exploration Geophysics, Global Geophysics and Exploration and Engineering Seismology.
Profile of Geophysical Engineering Program ITB
In accordance with the national standards of higher education in Indonesia, every graduate of the applied geophysical engineering degree program is expected to be able to have the following skills:
- Capable of applying science, technology, and art within her/his expertise and adaptable to various situations faced during solving a problem.
- Mastering in-depth general and specific theoretical concepts of a certain knowledge and capable of formulating related problem-solving procedures.
- Capable of taking strategic decisions based on information and data analysis and provides direction in choosing several alternative solutions.
Geophysical engineering graduates are expected to be able to become prospective experts who are able to apply geophysical science in the world of work related to their expertise. A geophysical engineering graduate is expected to be able to work in the exploration of natural resources such as oil and gas, minerals and also in the field of disaster mitigation such as earthquakes etc.
Advisory Board
Geophysical Engineering is continuously improving the curriculum and academic environment of bachelor, master and doctoral degree through advisory boards.
